Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, is an antique technique involving heated beeswax to which color pigments are added. It has been dated as early as the 5th century B.C., and was used by the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians.

The word encaustic comes from the Greek language and means 'to burn in', which refers to the process of fusing the paint.
